Places To Visit In Puerto Rico

Icacos Island

Icacos Island
January 20th, 2015

With so many fun places to explore in Puerto Rico, it’s funny that such a small island as Icacos Island is rarely overlooked by tourists who know where to find the best snorkeling spots. This is not a developed area, but it’s a great stop for beach-loving families.

The Way to Icacos

The tiny Icacos Island is just off Fajardo in Puerto Rico, and it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to get there on a boat. There are plenty of Catamaran services in Fajardo and they will take you on an excursion there, so you won’t have to worry about getting to the island on your own.

But you need to make your own preparations for your trip. Keep in mind that there are no facilities on the island, so everything you will need for the day must be brought along. That means food and drinks, towels, floatation devices, and snorkeling gear. Footwear is crucial for the sand burrs, and you should also do your civic duty and bring a trash bag along so you don’t leave a mess behind.

If you’re planning to spend some time at the beach, a beach umbrella is a good idea. The sand looks great but the sunlight reflects off the sand so you’ll also need lots of sunscreen. Your kids may want to explore  the island to find some interesting wildlife. But for most adults, chilling on the beach can be very relaxing.

Snorkeling Fun

Some boats may require you to share the ride with other families, but you need not worry about your privacy. Each family can just pick one stretch along the shore. Whatever spot you pick, the sand is going to be white, and the water will be clear with little waves lapping the shore.

Swimming in the water can be fun, and you can also do some snorkeling on the nearby reef. But after you’ve eaten your fill and the kids are done with the swimming and exploring, the boat may then take you to the outside reef where the snorkeling is truly spectacular.

Here, the coral is spectacular with lots of colors and variety. The marine creatures are often found in large numbers as well, and you will probably hate yourself if you didn’t bring an underwater camera to capture the moment. Here, lots of little fish share the area with you, and huge schools of fishes are common. In all likelihood, you’ll also get to see octopi, turtles, and stingrays.

Choosing a Tour

For maximum enjoyment, the choice of boat you hire to take you to the Icacos Island will factor in greatly. Make sure you pick one that can help bring in food and snorkeling gear. Some of the tour operators even offer snorkeling lessons for beginners, so your children may enjoy Icacos Island to the fullest. This island is fun for the whole family, and even more so when you choose the right tour operator.
