Indulge Your Urge to Travel by Knowing How to Save on Plane Tickets

December 3rd, 2013

You don’t need to rob a bank! Even if you’ve got your heart set on traveling, but don’t have enough money to do so, you can still stick to the straight and narrow. Do it by learning how to save money on plane tickets. Unless you have other concerns, it won’t be long before you’re winging your way out to where your heart wants to be.

1. Plan Your Trip Carefully

This is the most important part of your money-saving efforts. By planning your trip carefully, you’ll be able to avail of lower plane fare costs that come from:

  • Booking ahead of time – airlines give lower price quotes when your expected date of departure isn’t too near the day that you make the booking. Doing this at least five to six weeks before your intended travel date can be very favorable for you.

  • Knowing what places you can substitute for destinations that may be too costly for you – if you’re not particular about an exact destination, but are just longing to see something different in a generic sense – like a tropical beach, for example – you don’t have to go halfway across the world, if there are places that are nearer to you, and therefore, more affordable.

  • Being able to find promotions announced by the airlines and their travel partners – these are often seasonal, but they also do these close to company anniversaries.

2.  Compare and Contrast

Don’t put all your eggs (or hopes) in one basket. There are numerous online travel companies that you can compare and contrast, with respect to the rates they offer.

3. Take Part in NYOPs

NYOP stands for Name Your Own Price promotions.  While the mechanics of such promotions vary from provider to provider, they have the common goal of bringing you the best lowest possible price for your plane tickets.  For example, Priceline will even let you work between your estimated budget, which could let get discounts by as much as 50%, through their online bidding system.

4. Accumulate Miles

Frequent traveler reward programs (“miles”) have been in existence for at least two decades. Airlines with “miles” can let you fly for free to destinations that can be shouldered by the mileage your have already accumulated.  If you have no “miles” yet, don’t worry. Some credit cards, rental car agencies, hotels, and even restaurants will rack up “miles” for you, depending on the level and frequency of your patronage.

5. Cozy Up With the Shoulder Season

Do your best to travel during the Shoulder Season, which is somewhere in the middle of the peak season and the low season for any given destination.

6. Be on the Lookout for Sales

Airlines ordinarily unleash their sales promos on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Check this out on Fly.

7. Grab the Freebies

You can get free plane tickets (what could be better than free?) just by signing-up for selected financial items such as loans, mortgages, and even credit cards.  Should you decide to take this option, however, make sure that you really need the item that you are signing up for, and not just doing it to get a freebie ticket!
