Places To Visit In Puerto Rico

Sun Bay Beach

Sun Bay Beach
January 20th, 2015

Nearly every beach on Isla de Vieques or even in the whole of Puerto Rico is beautiful in its own special way. Each beach around here may be the very essence of picturesque perfection, but since everybody realizes this you will have to tolerate the crowds every time you pay visit.

Sometimes a beach may offer spectacular scenery along with a significant sparseness of crowds, and that’s because the beach is inaccessible or perhaps not blessed with all the modern amenities like nearby restaurants. Some beaches don’t even have any bathrooms to speak of at all!

But of all the beaches in the romantic Isla de Vieques, perhaps the most easily accessible is Sun Bay Beach. If you prefer beaches with a modicum of convenience, then Sun Bay is just about ideal.

The Great Things about Sun Bay Beach

Where do we start? Perhaps we should mention its beauty first of all, because that’s what you’re likely to notice first. Everywhere you look it seems postcard-perfect. The water is blue up to the horizon. The bay is wide and framed by a lush tropical landscape. Trees and statuesque pines are everywhere, and you can always find spot of sand under a palm tree to shelter you against the sun. The island horses feel right at home, and at the end of the day the sight of the setting sun is simply priceless.

And if you don’t like crowds at all (the reason so many people go to Isla de Vieques in the first place), then you don’t have to tolerate them either. Even at its busiest, people are pretty much spread out all over the 2-mile beach.

Accessibility

Sun Bay Beach is also one of the few beaches you can access even without a car. There’s paved road from La Tienda Verde to the beach, plus a route along Esperanza beach. If you do have a car, parking costs only a few bucks from Wednesday to Sunday. On Mondays and Tuesdays, parking is free.

You can access Sun Bay Beach for free on any day, and it’s open from dawn till dusk. From Wednesday to Sunday, the facilities are also open. That includes a snack bar, toilets, along with camping facilities. There are lifeguards as well, so visitors with kids may feel much more secure here.

Not that it’s dangerous. In fact, the water is very shallow. The waves are also tame, so little kids and parents need not feel apprehensive at all.

And even when the facilities are closed, the proximity of the town of Esperanza offers a lot of convenience too. That means you won’t have any trouble getting in and out, snacks and drinks are nearby, and so are the bathroom facilities.

Beauty, privacy, and convenience—Sun Bay Beach has them all.
