For those looking for an unforgettable adventure while vacationing in Puerto Rico, make sure to include the Tanamá River in your itinerary. It’s one of the main attractions in Utuado, and it’s guaranteed to give you an amazing experience.
The Tanamá River is a unique underground river which boasts exciting activities like cave tubing, rappelling, mountain climbing, body rafting, spelunking, hiking, and ziplining.
While you can certainly find so many cool escapades in Puerto Rico, there’s nothing quite like what the Tanamá River has to offer. This river is situated in the La Cordillera Central which is a mountainous region and its waters flow along the towns of Adjuntas, Utuado and Arecibo.
All activities for the Tanamá River begins in Utuado, a beautiful region approximately 90 minutes away from San Juan. Going there, you will see so many breath taking views and even traces of the pre-Columbian civilization can still be seen when you pass through the Utuado valley.
Hiking, Mountain Climbing and Cave Tubing
If there’s one thing that is not very common in Puerto Rico, it’s cave tubing, and companies like Tanama River Adventures offers tourists the opportunity to indulge. This is why people flock to Tanamá River to experience it. So, if you’re here for cave tubing, make sure you arrive early not only to avoid the crowd but also because it often rains in the afternoons, and when it does, water levels tend to rise. When this happens, guides and operators would have no choice but to postpone the activity.
As soon as you arrive at your starting point, you will be met by a guide. You’ll have to take a 45-60 minute hike along the rivers and through the woods, until you reach the cave. You can opt to stop and admire the petroglyphs and artifacts, before continuing with your journey to the top of a mountain if you want to admire the spectacular views from hundreds of feet above sea level.
Once you’re ready for your cave tubing activity, you will need to climb down the mountain and head back to the river. You’ll be required to put on a life jacket and a headlamp before you begin your exciting journey through a long underground cave known as the El Portillo Cave.
Another fun activity you can do when you go to Tanamá River is body rafting. It’s safe enough for everyone to try, even if you have no prior experience. Your guide will teach you everything you need to know. Some tours will also let you experience cave tubing and body rafting in one, although there are those that will offer only the body rafting activity.
After walking along the mountain trails surrounded by nature, you and your companions will then start your body rafting adventure and float along the Tanamá River. You will have to brave through rapids until you reach your final destination. It’s a challenging activity but definitely well worth it for adventure seekers.
If you want an even more exciting adventure, try out the rappelling in Tanamá River, which will take you to the river from a huge cave opening roughly 80 feet high. It’s not for the faint of heart though!
